Dictionary/Glossary

German-French-Italian-English dictionary of plant names and technical terms used in the NFI. Definitions are given for the terms highlighted in yellow.

• indicator species

  a) Species whose presence or characteristics allow conclusions to been drawn about other characteristics of the ecosystem (according to TWF). Endangered species are often selected as indicators (e.g. Capercaillie). b) Plants and animals which react very sensitive to specific environmental influences (according to WT) cf. indicators.
• [de] Bioindikator
  a) Arten, aus deren Vorkommen oder Eigenschaften auf andere Eigenschaften des Ökosystems geschlossen wird (nach TWF). Oft werden als Indikatoren bedrohte Arten (z. B. Auerwild) ausgewählt. b) Pflanzen und Tiere, die auf bestimmte Umwelteinflüsse besonders empfindlich reagieren (nach WT), vgl. Indikatoren.
• [fr] bioindicateur
  a) Espèces dont la présence ou les caractéristiques permettent d'établir des conclusions relatives à d'autres caractéristiques de l'écosystème (TWF). Les espèces menacées sont souvent utilisées comme indicateurs (p. ex. le grand tétras). b) Plantes et animaux qui réagissent de manière très sensible à des certaines influences de l'environnement (WT), cf. indicateur.
• [it] bioindicatori
  a) Specie, alla cui presenza o alle cui caratteristiche si collegano altre proprietà dell'ecosistema (TWF). Spesso si scelgono quali indicatori specie minacciate (es. gallo cedrone). b) Vegetali o animali che reagiscono in modo particolarmente sensibile a determinati influssi ambientali (WT), vedi indicatori.

• The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
• The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
