German-French-Italian-English dictionary of plant names and technical terms used in the NFI. Definitions are given for the terms highlighted in yellow.

• vegetation, potential natural

  Potential natural condition of the vegetation imagined for today if the effect of humans on the vegetation under the current living conditions were removed and if the new equilibrium could be established at once (TÜXEN 1956).

  Gedachter natürlicher Zustand der Vegetation, der sich für heute entwerfen lässt, wenn die menschliche Wirkung auf die Vegetation unter den heute vorhandenen Lebensbedingungen beseitigt und die natürliche Vegetation sozusagen schlagartig in das neue Gleichgewicht eingeschaltet gedacht würde (TÜXEN 1956).

  État naturel supposé de la végétation que l'on conçoit aujourd'hui lorsque la végétation, dans les conditions de vie actuelles, n'est plus soumise aux effets des activités humaines ce qui permettrait à la végétation naturelle de s'insérer pour ainsi dire spontanément dans un nouvel équilibre (TÜXEN 1956).
• [it] vegetazione potenziale naturale
  Ipotetico stato naturale della vegetazione che, allo stato attuale delle conoscenze, si assume in caso di improvvisa sospensione degli influssi antropici. Trattasi in pratica di un'immaginaria proiezione della vegetazione verso questo nuovo stato di equilibrio (TÜXEN 1956).

• The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
• The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
