Dictionary/Glossary

German-French-Italian-English dictionary of plant names and technical terms used in the NFI. Definitions are given for the terms highlighted in yellow.

• forest edge

  Border or transition zone of the vegetation form forest to other elements of the landscape. The forest edge includes shelterbelt, shrub belt and herbaceous fringe, cf. ecotone.
• [de] Waldrand
  Grenz- oder Übergangsbereich der Vegetationsform Wald zu anderen Elementen der Landschaft. Der Waldrand umfasst Waldmantel, Strauchgürtel und Krautsaum, vgl. auch Ökoton.
• [fr] lisière
  Domaine de transition ou limite entre la forme de végétation forêt et d'autres éléments du paysage. La lisière comprend le manteau forestier, le cordon de buissons et l'ourlet herbeux.
• [it] margine boschivo (margine del bosco
  Zona limite o di transizione dalla forma di vegetazione bosco ad altri elementi del paesaggio. Il margine del bosco è composto da mantello boschivo, fascia arbustiva e orlo delle erbe.

• The German, French and Italien plant names were taken mainly from the book Die häufigsten Waldbäume der Schweiz or from the Flora Helvetica
• The English plant names were taken form the internet (swiss web flora, PLANTS Database and Dictionary of Common Names by plantpress.com). The notations and abbreviations were taken from IPNI - The international Plant Names Index.
