The forest provides a habitat for approximately 60% of all plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria living in Switzerland. The NFI monitors the quality of forests and forest margins at the national level. The key indicators are dead wood, old stand, structural diversity, or the nativeness of the stocking. It is imperative to continually adapt the NFI's data catalogue and optimize the assessment models (e.g. new key for forest margins) to the current state of knowledge and according to need.
The results from the NFI-project Biodiversity are contained in national and international forest reports, as well as in Biodiversity Monitoring Switzerland reports (BDM indicators E3, E8, E9, E10) and in the federal indicator system, Monitoring Sustainable Development (MONET).
