Gliederung der Schweiz in fünf Regionen (Jura, Mittelland, Voralpen, Alpen und Alpensüdseite) mit relativ einheitlichen Wuchs- und Holzproduktionsbedingungen. Die Produktionsregionen wurden vom Bundesamt für Forstwesen lange vor dem ersten Landesforstinventar (LFI1, 1983-1985) gebildet. Mit einer kleinen Ausnahme am Genfersee folgen die Grenzen der Produktionsregionen noch immer den damaligen Gemeindegrenzen. Im Gegensatz zum LFI verwendet die vom Bundesamt für Statistik geführte Forststatistik als Gliederung nicht die Produktionsregionen, sondern die Forstzonen, deren Grenzverlauf etwas anders ist.
